Dr. Mortenson holds a BA in Mathematics (University of Minnesota), an MDiv (Trinity Evangelical Divinity School), and a PhD in History of Geology (Coventry University in England). Like most secular college graduates, Mortenson grew up in an educational system immersed in evolution taught as fact. But shortly after becoming a Christian during his first year at the University of Minnesota, he began to realize that the evolutionary idea of millions of years was false.
Before joining Answers in Genesis in 2001, Mortenson served as a missionary with Campus Crusade for Christ for 26 years, mostly in Eastern Europe, both before and after the fall of communism. He has lectured on the creation-evolution controversy in 27 countries in homes, schools, colleges, universities, and seminaries, and he has participated in 7 formal debates with evolutionist university professors in 4 countries.
As a member of the Evangelical Theological Society, Mortenson has presented papers and helped organize other papers for their annual meetings. He has written numerous popular-level and technical articles and a shortened version of his Ph.D. thesis, The Great Turning Point: The Church’s Catastrophic Mistake on Geology—Before Darwin (2004). He co-edited and contributed to the 14-author book, Coming to Grips with Genesis: Biblical Authority and the Age of the Earth (2008), and he edited and contributed to the 16-author book, Searching for Adam: Genesis and the Truth about Man’s Origin (2016), which biblically and scientifically defends the literal truth about Adam found in Genesis.
Dr. Mortenson and his wife, Margie, have been happily married since 1976 and have 8 grown children and 13 grandchildren. In his free time, he enjoys walks with his wife, going to the symphony, working on house-remodeling projects, and reading.
